Cataract surgery with toric IOL corrects astigmatism in post-corneal transplant eyes

Cataract surgery with toric IOL implantation improved visual acuity and corrected astigmatism in eyes that previously underwent corneal transplantation, according to results of a study.

The retrospective case series included 26 eyes of 25 patients who underwent corneal transplantation and subsequent cataract surgery with toric IOL implantation. The mean interval between corneal transplantation and cataract surgery was 7.9 years.

The researchers evaluated logMAR uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (UDVA, CDVA), automated or subjective refraction, and complications. Mean follow-up was 14 months.

Study results showed mean UDVA improved significantly, from 1.12 preoperatively to 0.45 at final follow-up. Postoperative UDVA was 20/40 or better in 16 patients.

The researchers found mean CDVA also improved significantly, from 0.70 preoperatively to 0.15. Postoperative CDVA was 20/40 or better in 24 eyes.

Mean refractive spherical equivalent decreased significantly from –3.67 D preoperatively to –0.58 D postoperatively, and mean refractive astigmatism also decreased significantly, from –5.49 D to –2.61 D, according to the researchers.

No intraoperative or postoperative complications were reported.
