Mercy Ships volunteer medical professionals have provided more than 33,000 free eye operations and more than 222,600 eye consultations since 1978, according to a press release.

The organization’s more than 25-year partnership with Alcon has led to the Alcon Eye Fellowship in Africa, where surgeons are trained and return to their communities with improved skill sets in an effort to restore vision to more patients, according to the press release.

Mercy Ships makes a tremendous impact in serving the underprivileged who have been blinded by cataracts. Imagine the overwhelming sense of joy when these individuals are once again able to see their loved ones and the world after having their vision surgically restored,” James R. Singer, DO, a volunteer ophthalmologist with Mercy Ships, said in the press release. “It is nothing short of miraculous.”

The Mercy Ship is currently sailing to Madagascar, where free surgeries and other procedures will be performed for 8 months.
