Treatment with a combination of topical nepafenac and dexamethasone reduced macular swelling and inflammation in patients after cataract surgery, according to study findings.

The prospective study included 152 patients who were at low risk for postoperative inflammation after cataract surgery. Seventy-five patients were randomly assigned to receive nepafenac ophthalmic suspension 0.1% in combination with dexamethasone 0.1%, and 77 patients were randomly assigned to receive dexamethasone 0.1% and placebo. The researchers used optical coherence tomography to assess patients’ postoperative swelling of the macula.

Patients in the combination treatment group experienced statistically significant reductions in macular volume at 3 and 6 weeks postoperatively, in the proportion of patients with more than 10 µm of swelling in the central macula at 3 and 6 weeks, and in mean laser flare intensity at 1 day after surgery compared with those in the control group, according to the researchers. Additionally, combination treatment resulted in significant reductions in pain during the first 24 hours after surgery, as well as in ocular discomfort and photophobia during the first 3 weeks after surgery, compared with dexamethasone plus placebo.
