LONDON — European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons President Roberto Bellucci, MD, welcomed colleagues from around the world, telling them that the focus of his term will be on education.

“I want to ensure that ESCRS is regarded as a leader in the provision of high-quality, expert-led education for ophthalmologists,” Bellucci said at opening ceremony of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons Congress here.

Among other educational initiatives, ESCRS offers an online on-demand education library that includes all the presentations held at recent meetings.

“I would like to build on what we already have, develop it further and look at introducing new educational sources for our members and delegates,” Bellucci said.

ESCRS also invests heavily in research activities, he said, with several projects underway, including the PREMED study on the prevention of macular edema progression following cataract surgery in diabetic patients, a patient-reported outcomes study, a femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery study and the EUREQUO project.

Furthermore, ESCRS continues to support the work of two charitable organizations, ORBIS and OXFAM.

“ESCRS is proud to offer a scientific arena to all its members, delegates, supporters and to the industry,” Bellucci said. “All of these form a community in the interest of science and to the advantage of our patients.”
