AcuFocus receives CE mark for extended depth-of-focus IOL

AcuFocus has obtained CE mark in the European Union for its IC-8 small-aperture extended depth-of-focus IOL, the company announced in a press release.

The IC-8 IOL is designed to improve visual quality across a broad range for patients with presbyopia who undergo cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange.

The company’s flagship product, the Kamra inlay, established the concept of a small-aperture effect improving near vision while maintaining distance vision, according to the release.

“The small-aperture effect is a globally accepted method for vision correction,” Jim Mazzo, chairman and CEO of AcuFocus, said in the release. “The Kamra inlay is the ideal solution for presbyopic patients who don’t want or require lens removal. With the addition of the IOL to our patented small-aperture portfolio, we can now provide cataract patients with the same exceptional vision.”

Several clinicians are scheduled to discuss the IC-8 IOL at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons in London.

More than 24 million cataract procedures are expected to be performed globally, including almost 4 million in Europe, by 2015, according to the release.

AcuFocus plans to release the IC-8 IOL in select markets across Europe. The IC-8 IOL is not approved in the U.S.
