European Glaucoma Society releases new guidelines for glaucoma

NICE, France — The fourth edition of the Terminology and Guidelines for Glaucoma was presented and made available during the 2014 European Glaucoma Society meeting, held here.
In his welcome speech, EGS president Carlo Enrico Traverso, MD, FARVO, said the new guidelines are “the result of a great joint effort by a big group of experts, more numerous this time than for all previous editions.”

Innovation, education and communication are the three core areas of activity in which the EGS has increasingly engaged over time, Traverso said, building up a tight-knit, motivated and efficient internal taskforce — the EGS committees — and solid relationships with ophthalmic industries.
Erik L. Greve, MD, PhD, co-founder of the EGS, recalled the times in which the society was born.
“It was a gathering of … representatives from all countries in Europe; some of them had great difficulties to come. In 1979, there was no Glaucoma Society, no free travel — there was the iron curtain. There was no automated visual field, no optic nerve head analyzer. Beta-blockers were just around. There were no prostaglandins, no phaco, no carbonic anhydrase drops, no implants and no guidelines. No email and no internet,” Greve said. “In this relatively short period of time, immense changes have occurred. EGS is now a great society that combines world science with European sophistication.”
