Second Dry Eye WorkShop to come in fall

A second Dry Eye WorkShop is expected to take place this fall, and the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society is now accepting applications for participants.
Ten years after launching the original Dry Eye WorkShop (DEWS), the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society (TFOS) is planning the sequel, DEWS II. According to the organization, the workshop will update the definition, classification and diagnosis of dry eye disease; assess the etiology, mechanism, distribution and global impact of dry eye; and address management and therapy.

“Since our publication of the first TFOS DEWS report, there have been tremendous advances in our understanding the pathophysiology of dry eye disease, as well as its epidemiology, diagnosis and therapy,” David A. Sullivan, PhD, founder and recent TFOS president, told Ocular Surgery News. “TFOS believes that it is time to critically address these advances, which may warrant a change in the definition and/or classification of dry eye disease.”
TFOS will finalize the DEWS II mission, select additional workshop participants, establish objectives and decide upon a timeline with an appointed steering committee in the coming months.
“We anticipate that this evidence-based process will involve the effort of at least 80 international experts and require more than 18 months to complete,” Sullivan said. “The TFOS DEWS II will be, as with all TFOS workshops, an international effort that will lead to a global consensus in dry eye disease.”
