Whether we are administrators or doctors, none of us especially likes judgment or “scorecards.” Yet we know that such a scorecard can be a wonderful stimulus for a frank discussion about the strengths and weaknesses of your administrator. Without a tool like this, it is easy to avoid providing or receiving necessary and important feedback.

If you are a surgeon reading this column, share it with your administrator and have a balanced discussion of opportunities for improvement.

Administrators want to know if they are performing up to or above the expected level. Knowing that we all have the same goals and planning to get there together can make a big difference in terms of motivation and success.

For administrators reading this column, score yourself, meet with your managing partner to see if she or he agrees with your assessment, and come up with a jointly derived career development plan.
