Nidek has announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued 510(k) clearance for the AL-Scan Optical Biometer.

The AL-Scan Optical Biometer has the capability to measure axial length, corneal curvature radius, anterior chamber depth, central corneal thickness, white-to-white distance and pupil size for cataract surgery in 10 seconds, according to a company press release. Features such as 3-D auto tracking and auto shot help to increase accuracy and provide ease and comfort to the surgeon.

The device can calculate nine IOL formulas, including Shammas PL for post-LASIK eyes, and can determine the angle between the steepest corneal meridian and the line passing through a predetermined “landmark” for toric IOL implants, according to the press release.
