STAAR receives CE mark for preloaded ICL system

STAAR Surgical announced it has received CE mark approval for the new Visian ICL preloaded system.

The system is designed to reduce procedure times, shorten new surgeons’ learning curves to perform implantable collamer lens procedures and enable more consistent ICL lens delivery, according to a company press release.

“In the time and motion study done at our facility with the Visian ICL preloaded system, lens preparation time was reduced by 68%,” Erik L. Mertens, MD, FEBO, medical director and founder of the Medipolis Eye Centre in Antwerp, Belgium, said in the press release. “I look forward to the availability of the Visian ICL preloaded system. I expect this system will increase the adoption of Visian ICL use, as well as add additional efficiencies and reproducibility to the implantation procedure.”

New intellectual property developed by STAAR’s research and development team has been incorporated into the system’s design, including a hydrophilic coating technology that allows the ICL to transition smoothly through the injector system to the small incision for the ICL procedure.

The system’s official launch is planned to occur during the Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons in London this September, according to the release.
