With the limitation of correction of refractive error at the corneal plane, the role of phakic IOLs becomes apparent because they allow correction outside these limits in which patients are most hindered by their refractive error. Posterior chamber phakic IOLs are relatively easy to insert, but great care is required so that the crystalline lens is not traumatized.
Posterior chamber phakic IOLs are often inundated with the problems of induction of cataract and pigment dispersion syndrome. Careful insertion of the IOL is a must to avoid delayed problems. With the availability of CentraFLOW lenses (STAAR Surgical), the problem of pupillary block is avoided and performing a laser iridotomy before surgery or a surgical iridectomy at the time of Visian ICL implantation is no longer needed.
