Wavefront-guided PRK, wavefront-optimized PRK yield similar visual symptoms
Visual symptoms were similar after wavefront-guided PRK and wavefront-optimized PRK, but patients reported fewer symptoms after wavefront-optimized treatment, according to a study.
The prospective randomized study included 142 eyes of 71 patients. One eye underwent wavefront-guided PRK with the Visx CustomVue S4 IR excimer laser (Abbott Medical Optics). Fellow eyes underwent wavefront-optimized PRK with the Allegretto Wave Eye-Q 400 Hz excimer laser (Alcon).
Patients answered questionnaires on quality of vision and visual symptoms preoperatively and 1, 3, 6 and 12 months postoperatively.
From 3 months onward, mean visual quality scores increased in the wavefront-optimized group and the wavefront-guided group; the change was statistically significant (P < .003).
Both groups reported similar visual symptoms at all points. However, more patients reported excellent vision in their wavefront-guided eye at 6 months (P = .029).
Patients reported significantly fewer symptoms in their wavefront-optimized eye at 12 months (P = .044).
Significantly more patients preferred the wavefront-optimized eye at 1 month (P = .005), but the preference disappeared at 3 months.
