Novel procedure relieves dry eye symptoms, improves meibomian gland function

Debridement-scaling of the line of Marx and a keratinized lid margin significantly relieved symptoms and improved meibomian gland function in patients with evaporative dry eye, a study found.
The study included 28 patients diagnosed with evaporative dry eye and a thickened line of Marx. Of these patients, 16 were assigned to the test group and underwent the new procedure and 12 were assigned to the control group.
The line of Marx of all patients was stained with lissamine green. Patients in the test group underwent debridement-scaling of the stained line of Marx and the width of the keratinized lower lid margin using a stainless steel golf club spud.
Patients were evaluated at 1 month.
Symptoms significantly improved from a score of 13.4 before debridement-scaling to 10.5 after debridement-scaling in the test group (P < .0001) vs. 13.9 at baseline to 14.3 at 1 month in the control group.
Meibomian gland function significantly improved from 2.6 before debridement-scaling to 3.8 after debridement-scaling in the test group (P = .0007) vs. 2.7 at baseline to 2.4 at 1 month in the control group.
The procedure should be considered to treat meibomian gland dysfunction and evaporative dry eye, the study authors said.
