Fine, Malyugin receive Hawaiian Eye Foundation awards

KOLOA, Hawaii – I. Howard Fine, MD, received the Philip M. Corboy, MD, Memorial Award for Distinguished Service in Ophthalmology sponsored by Bausch + Lomb. Fine, in private practice in Eugene, Oregon, and co-founder of Oregon Eye Surgery Center, is renowned as a clinician, educator and technology and technique innovator.
John Corboy, MD, introduced Fine, noting that Fine has a list of lectures, awards, honors and accomplishment too numerous to mention, but said Fine was “one of the 25 most influential ophthalmologists of the twentieth century.”

Using an analogy linking music and surgery, Fine said, “The conductor in his or her mind hears what he wants the music to become. And through education and explanation he conveys that to the artists. He doesn’t command anyone and he doesn’t order anybody. He invites the artist to participate. And if he gets everyone on the same page, highly focused and intensely engaged, he may create a musical masterpiece,” Fine said.
Fine said the surgeon is the conductor in the operating room. And the surgeon, like the conductor, “should lead by teaching and explanation through control, clarity and precision.”
“Indeed every cataract surgery should be a work of art,” Fine said.
Boris Malyugin, MD, PhD, S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Complex Deputy Director General in Russia and inventor of the Malyugin ring, received the 2014 International Award for Excellence sponsored by EagleVision.

Malyugin said he was humbled to receive the award and credited mentor Professor Svyatoslav Fyodorov, along with the inventive process, for supporting creation of the Malyugin ring. –by Joan-Marie Stiglich
