KOLOA, Hawaii – When repairing a patient’s aesthetic appearance after ocular laceration trauma, it is important to maintain symmetry between the eyes, a presenter said here.

“Keep your eyes on both eyes,” Femida Kherani, MD, said during the “Principles of Functional Eyelid Surgery’ session at the Hawaiian Eye meeting. “If you align the brows, if you align the upper lid and align the lower lid, you’re giving it better symmetry.”

When beginning treatment first update the patient’s tetanus immunization; debride and irrigate the wound; and prescribe appropriate antibiotics, Kherani said.

Also, be sure to perform a complete ocular examination to rule out a ruptured globe, she said. Globe repair takes priority.

From there, “be mindful of the anatomy,” Kherani said. “Be attentive to the eyelid layers. Stent the lacriminal system, if it is involved. And reattach that medial c anthus to bring back the corner medial line.” –by Daniel Morgan
