Dislocation/ecentration,incorrect lens power top indications for IOL exchange
Lens dislocation/decentration, incorrect lens power and patient dissatisfaction were the leading indications for IOL exchange in private practice, according to a recently published study.
“The request for IOL exchange owing to patient dissatisfaction is increasing, especially for those with undesired visual acuity in the absence of photic symptoms,” the study authors said.
The retrospective case review included 57 eyes of 53 patients who underwent IOL exchange between 2007 and 2011. Mean patient age was 72.6 years. Mean postoperative follow-up was 14.9 months.
The leading indications for IOL exchange were lens dislocation/decentration (45.6%), incorrect lens power (22.8%), patient dissatisfaction (21.1%) and lens opacification (7%).
Indications also included uveitis-glaucoma-hyphema syndrome and vitreous prolapse during anterior vitrectomy.
Posterior capsule opening occurred in eight of 14 eyes (57%) with in-the-bag IOL dislocation.
No vision-threatening complications were reported.
