DSAEK with internationally shipped donor corneas has minimal endothelial cell loss

Descemet’s stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty with internationally shipped precut donor corneas yielded sufficient outcomes with minimal endothelial cell loss, according to a study.
One hundred thirty-four eyes of 128 patients in Kyoto, Japan, who underwent DSAEK with precut donor corneas internationally shipped from Portland, Ore., or Seattle were analyzed in the retrospective noncomparative case series for endothelial cell density loss related to international shipping, postoperative endothelial cell density, visual recovery and complications.
There was a mean of 63.2 hours between cut and surgery.
The mean endothelial cell density loss was 30% at 6 months, 34% at 12 months, 44% at 24 months and 51% at 36 months.
LogMAR best corrected visual acuity improved from 1.40 at baseline to 0.22 at 12 months postoperatively.
Graft dislocation occurred in 12 eyes (8.9%), and graft rejection occurred in three eyes (2.2%).
Forty precut donor corneas were evaluated for endothelial cell density loss related to international shipping; mean endothelial cell density loss was 2.3%.
