Visual outcomes good after implantation of scleral-fixated IOLs
Scleral-fixated IOLs showed good long-term visual outcomes with minimal complications, according to a study.
The retrospective study comprised 104 eyes of 99 Chinese patients in whom primary or secondary scleral-fixated IOLs were implanted between 1997 and 2008.
Main outcome measures were visual results and complications. At the time of surgery, mean patient age was 67.1 years, and mean follow-up was 73.4 months.
Mean logMAR best corrected visual acuity improved from 0.8 to 0.5, which was statistically significant (P < .01).
Seventy-five eyes (72.1%) had improved or unchanged final visual acuity; 25 eyes (24%) developed postoperative complications. Further procedures were necessary in 13 eyes (12.5%) because of complications.
Two eyes experienced suture breakage, which resulted in lens subluxation.
