An angle-supported phakic IOL corrected myopia, but due to its short-term rotational stability, it may be unsuitable for cylinder correction, according to a study.
The retrospective cohort study included 50 eyes of 28 patients who underwent implantation of an AcrySof Cachet angle-supported phakic IOL (Alcon) and 12 months of follow-up.
Digital overlay of ocular photographs evaluated IOL rotation within 2 weeks of implantation and at 12 months. Secondary outcomes of refractive power, uncorrected distance visual acuity and corrected distance visual acuity were evaluated at baseline and 3 months postoperatively.
At 12 months, there was a mean 11° of rotation. Mean preoperative refractive measures improved by 3 months.
Anterior chamber implantation of the IOL seems to be a safe treatment for moderate to severe myopia; however, the moderate rotation may make the design unsuitable for cylinder correction, the study authors said.
