Same-day and later pars plana vitrectomy for retained lens fragments after cataract surgery yielded comparable visual acuity results and rates of complication, a study found.

Five hundred sixty-nine eyes were included in the study; 117 underwent same-day surgery, 131 underwent surgery within 1 week, and 321 underwent surgery after 1 week.

Median follow-up was 8 months.

Final best corrected visual acuity at last visit was 20/40 or better in 71 eyes (61%) that underwent same-day surgery, 82 eyes (63%) that underwent same-week surgery and 179 eyes (56%) that underwent surgery after 1 week.

Complications such as cystoid macular edema, corneal edema, inflammation, retinal detachment, elevated IOP, vitreous hemorrhage and suprachoroidal hemorrhage occurred in 79 eyes (68%), 95 eyes (73%) and 223 eyes (70%) that underwent surgery on the same day, in the same week and after 1 week, respectively.
