Surgery with a miniature glaucoma implant reduced IOP and had a transient effect on anterior segment parameters, according to a study.

The prospective study consisted of 19 eyes of 19 consecutive patients who received the Ex-PRESS miniature glaucoma implant (Alcon) and were evaluated before implantation and at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and 3 months postoperatively. Anterior and posterior corneal curvature, anterior and posterior corneal astigmatism, anterior chamber depth, anterior chamber volume and anterior chamber angle were measured before and after surgery.

IOP decreased significantly from 31.9 ± 10.1 mm Hg before surgery to 6.1 ± 5.7 mm Hg at 1 day (P < .0001), 10.6 ± 4.7 mm Hg at 1 week, 14.4 ± 8.3 mm Hg at 1 month and 15.7 ± 3.6 mm Hg at 3 months (P = .0011).

At 1 day, there was a significant increase in posterior corneal astigmatism and significant decreases in anterior chamber depth and anterior chamber volume; anterior corneal astigmatism increased but was not significant. At 3 months, the changes in these parameters were not significant.
