AMSTERDAM — Implantation with a single stent during microincisional cataract surgery produces a sustained, safe and effective surgical glaucoma treatment, according to one surgeon’s experience reported at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting here.

With 3 years of postoperative study data on patients with either open-angle glaucoma or pseudoexfoliative glaucoma and needing cataract surgery, Tobias H. Neuhann, MD, said that IOP was significantly reduced, resulting in 79% of patients at 16 mm Hg or less at month 36 and 74% being medication-free.

Neuhann’s 3-year postoperative data were collected on 22 eyes that underwent MICS phacoemulsification and implantation of a single iStent (Glaukos).

“We didn’t separate the open-angle glaucoma patients from the pseudoexfoliative glaucoma patients,” Neuhann said. “Later on, I saw that the pseudoexfoliation patients took just a little bit longer to get a good result than the open-angle glaucoma patients.”

Visual acuity was typical for MICS, he said: 95% of patients had visual acuity of 20/40 or better.
