AMSTERDAM — “A very special person made for a special destiny.”  With these words during the opening ceremony of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting, Philippe Sourdille, MD, commemorated Joseph Colin, MD, who passed away earlier this year.

Colin served on the ESCRS board for 8 years and was among the leading personalities in the societies.  He was remembered as an innovator with a critical, independent mind, who enthusiastically embraced new approaches but never forgot to maintain the objective, rigorous attitude of the scientist.

“Joseph Colin was born in the extreme part of the extreme west of France, where the sea and the wind continuously fight the land. He always had the forward-looking attitude of the man who stands on the shore looking out to the ocean and stands up under any circumstances,” Sourdille said.

At the age of 32, he became one of the youngest professors in France.

“A brilliant teacher, as he continued to be over the many years of his career. Creativity and dedication are part of his legacy as a teacher and surgeon,” Sourdille said.
