Aqueous flare increases in cystoid macular edema patients post cataract surgery

Increased aqueous flare values were found in patients with cystoid macular edema after cataract surgery, according to a study.

The prospective, non-randomized, clinical study included 30 eyes of 30 consecutive patients with clinically significant cystoid macular edema (CME) and vision loss. The patients with CME were compared with a control group comprised of 46 pseudophakic and 45 phakic eyes without CME.

Flare values were higher in CME patients compared with the pseudophakic group, which was statistically significant (P < .0001).

Aqueous flare values in CME patients correlated with best corrected visual acuity, which also showed statistical significance (P = .041).

“These flare values suggest that controlling postoperative inflammation might be the key to avoid or treat CME,” the researchers wrote.
