Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography predicted visual prognosis of commotio retinae, according to a study.

The retrospective review included 52 eyes of 52 patients with outer retinal atrophy resulting from closed-globe trauma. The authors analyzed correlations between OCT features and best corrected visual acuity.

Foveal thickness (r = −0.13; P < .001) and outer retinal atrophy grade (r = 0.796; P < .001) were shown to be significantly correlated with final BCVA. The most common feature seen with SD-OCT measurement was disruption of the inner and outer segments. The outer nuclear layer presented with atrophy, and disorganization was seen in the inner retina among severe cases.

Follow-up time for patients varied from 180 to 1,100 days and may have been a limitation of the study, the authors said.
