The European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons is creating a new database for femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery within the European Registry of Quality Outcomes for Cataract and Refractive Surgery, or EUREQUO.

“The aim is to provide a first real-life overall view of the outcomes of this surgery on a European scale and to enable individual surgeons to benchmark their own results,” Roberto Bellucci, MD, president elect of ESCRS, said.

In the EUREQUO style, data will be registered anonymously. Only surgeons with a minimum of 50 femtosecond laser procedures will be eligible to enter their results.

“This is to avoid the potentially misleading effects of the learning curve on outcome data,” Bellucci said.

The protocol for data collection will be finalized in October in Amsterdam, during the annual ESCRS meeting. The first presentation of results will be at the 2014 ESCRS meeting in London.
