‘US News & World Report’ ranks Bascom Palmer Eye Institute as nation’s best hospital for ophthalmology

For the 10th year in a row, the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami was ranked No. 1 nationally by the US News & World Report hospital rankings for ophthalmology.
Within the ophthalmology specialty, hospitals are ranked on reputation alone, as opposed to other specialties in which data such as death rates, patient safety and hospital reputation are considered. In the reputational survey, physicians are asked to name the hospitals they consider the best for difficult surgeries.
The ophthalmological facilities named by at least 5% of respondents in the past three annual surveys were ranked as “best hospitals.” Bascom Palmer took the No. 1 position by being named in 66.5% of surveys.
Also ranked near the top were the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, named in 64.4% of surveys, and the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, named in 61% of surveys.
Rounding out the top five best-ranked facilities were the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Hospital at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, named in 33.2% of surveys, and the Jules Stein Eye Institute at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, named in 29.5% of surveys.
No other facilities were named in more than 20% of surveys.
