Macular holes may occur after vitrectomy for myopic foveoschisis
Secondary full-thickness macular holes may develop after pars plana vitrectomy for myopic foveoschisis, according to a study.
The retrospective study included 42 eyes of 42 patients who underwent pars plana vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane peeling and gas tamponade for myopic foveoschisis with or without retinal detachment but without macular hole. Phakic eyes underwent cataract surgery.
Optical coherence tomography was used to assess retinal structures preoperatively and up to 6 months postoperatively.
Postoperative macular holes developed in eight eyes (19%). The mean interval between initial surgery and the development of macular holes was 1.6 months.
Foveal detachment was identified in seven of the eight eyes (87.5%); inner segment/outer segment (IS/OS) junction defects were also seen in seven eyes.
IS/OS junction defect was the only risk factor that had a statistically significant relationship with the development of macular holes (P = .018).
