Soft contact lens with sensor enables safe, continuous IOP monitoring
A novel pressure-sensitive contact lens proved safe and tolerable in providing continuous IOP monitoring, according to a study.
The prospective study included 20 healthy patients and 20 age-matched glaucoma patients who received the Sensimed Triggerfish Sensor, a soft disposable contact lens with an embedded telemetry chip and micro-fabricated strain gauge.
Patients received the device in one eye for 24 hours. Investigators used a 100-point visual analog scale to gauge tolerability; a score of zero denoted no discomfort and a score of 100 signified severe discomfort.
Patients in the healthy group wore the lens a median 24.2 hours, and those in the glaucoma group wore it a median 24.3 hours.
Mean tolerability score was 21.8 in the healthy group and 26.8 in the glaucoma group. Nineteen of the glaucoma patients said they would agree to use the device again.
Pachymetry readings were stable in both groups.
