Combined vitrectomy, cataract surgery with toric IOL treats idiopathic epiretinal membrane
A toric IOL in combination with vitrectomy and cataract surgery for idiopathic epiretinal membrane showed similar results in postoperative IOL axis stability compared with cataract surgery alone, according to a study.
In addition, uncorrected distance visual acuity was better than with spherical IOL implantation.
The prospective, nonrandomized interventional study involved two groups of patients. The toric IOL group comprised patients who received an AcrySof IQ toric IOL (Alcon), and the control group comprised patients who received an AcrySof IQ aspheric IOL (Alcon).
All patients had no prior cataract surgery and underwent epiretinal membrane triple surgery. Eyes had preoperative regular corneal cylinder of more than 0.75 D.
LogMAR uncorrected distance visual acuity showed significant improvement at 6 months in the control group and the toric emmetropic group (0.35 vs. 0.57, respectively; P = .028). The toric group showed more improvement.
Mean postoperative IOL axis rotation at 3 months was 3.67°.
