PDT yields good long-term outcomes for polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy
Photodynamic therapy produced favorable long-term results in patients with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy, but there was a high recurrence rate, according to a study.
The retrospective study included 42 eyes of 36 patients with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy who underwent PDT.
Polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy recurred in 33 eyes over a mean follow-up of 73.64 months and a mean number of 2.21 PDT treatments.
Mean logMAR best corrected visual acuity improved from 0.78 to 0.67 at 60 months. Mean BCVA improved in 14 eyes, remained stable in 23 eyes and decreased in five eyes.
Due to the high recurrence rate after initial PDT, careful long-term follow-up is recommended in these patients, the study authors said.
