Trypan blue decreases PCO after cortical cleaving hydrodissection
Injections of trypan blue after creation of a cleavage plane with hydrodissection reduced posterior capsule opacification, according to a study.
Eyes that underwent phacoemulsification for senile cataract were randomly categorized into two groups in a prospective, randomized, patient- and observer-masked clinical trial.
The trypan blue group comprised 150 eyes that underwent injection of 0.2 mL of trypan blue 0.1% into the capsular bag in two places that were 180° apart after cortical cleaving hydrodissection. The control group comprised 150 eyes that underwent injection of 0.2 mL of a saline solution.
Mean patient age was 62.79 years in the trypan blue group and 63.69 years in the control group. Final analysis included 102 eyes in the trypan blue group and 103 eyes in the control group.
The PCO scores in the trypan blue group were 0.1 and 0.15 at 6 months and 12 months, respectively. The PCO scores in the control group were 0.21 and 0.25 at 6 months and 12 months, respectively. The differences between these scores were statistically significant at 6 months and 12 months (P = .042 and P = .0227, respectively).
No trypan blue-related complications occurred.
