Combination treatment effective for vitreoretinal disease, corneal astigmatism
Toric IOL implantation combined with 25-gauge microincision vitrectomy treated eyes with both vitreoretinal disease and corneal astigmatism, according to a study.
The noncomparative, interventional case series included 12 patients with vitreoretinal disease, cataracts and corneal astigmatism who underwent phacoemulsification, toric IOL implantation with posterior capsulotomy and 25-gauge microincision vitrectomy.
The toric IOL was successfully implanted in the capsular bag of each patient.
Mean toric IOL axis rotation was 5.8°, 6.4° and 5.7° at 1 week, 1 month and 6 months postoperatively, respectively.
Mean uncorrected and best corrected visual acuities improved at 1 month postoperatively and were sustained after 6 months
Mean postoperative residual refractive cylinder was lower than the pre-existing regular corneal cylinder (P = .003), the study authors said.
One patient experienced temporary posterior iris synechiae; however, no other surgical complications were noted.
