Optical and visual analysis system provides method to screen PCO

MILAN — The Discovery optical analyzer from Innovative Visual Systems provides a rapid method to screen posterior capsule opacification, according to one surgeon.
Two technologies combined in the same system provide a retroillumination imaging and a wavefront spot imaging of the posterior capsule, where the position, quantity and local density of PCO can be visualized and measured. Both exams use near infrared light and can be performed in a dark room, with an undilated pupil simulating night light conditions.
"A strong correlation can be observed between the retroillumination image and the distortion of wavefront spots in the affected areas," Donald R. Sanders, MD, PhD, said at the annual joint meeting of Ocular Surgery News and the Italian Society of Ophthalmology.

On the wavefront spot image, the PCO-affected areas were detectable as darker and distorted pixels, below the light threshold.
Images before and after Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy showed the effect of the treatment.
Retroillumination images can also be processed to quantify PCO. Denser PCO areas were seen as red patterns, measurable as a percentage of the total capsule image.
