Superior hemifield defects may progress faster than other defects

Superior hemifield defects in normal-tension glaucoma patients may progress at a faster rate than other hemifield defects, according to a study.
The retrospective, observational cohort study examined the records of 142 normal-tension glaucoma patients who had more than five reliable standard visual field tests; 51 patients had superior hemifield defects, 44 had inferior hemifield defects, and 47 had both hemifield defects.
The progression rate among subjects with superior hemifield defects was significantly faster than those with inferior hemifield defects (P = .019), with the central and nasal zones demonstrating more pronounced progression.
The progression rate for subjects with superior hemifield defects also was significantly faster than in the superior hemifield of subjects with both hemifield defects (P = .001).
No other significant differences were observed.
