SEATTLE — Both patients and surgeons are satisfied after bilateral implantation of an aspheric diffractive multifocal one-piece IOL, according to a poster presented here.

The Tecnis multifocal one-piece IOL (ZMB00, Abbott Medical Optics) was bilaterally implanted in 106 patients with corneal astigmatism by surgeons who had not implanted this lens previously, and then both clinical and satisfaction assessments were made in a prospective, multicenter, open-label observation study.

Clinical outcomes 3 to 4 months postoperatively for mean binocular uncorrected visual acuities were 20/23 at distance, 20/30 at intermediate and 20/22 at near, according to Daniel H. Chang, MD, and colleagues in a poster presented at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology meeting. Patient satisfaction assessment found that 81.3% of patients would “definitely” or “most likely” choose the lens again.

In the surgeon assessment, 78.5% of surgeons felt comfortable implanting the IOL after six or fewer implantations and 92.9% would recommend the lens to family, friends and colleagues.

“Important is the surgeon assessment,” Chang told Ocular Surgery News. “It shows that surgeons would recommend [the lens] to someone they care about.”
