MILAN — A new laser system that will soon be launched in the international market provides good results, according to one speaker here.

The Microscan NanoVisum platform (NanoVision Group), which has recently been upgraded with the wavefront-guided PlatoScan treatment software linked to the L80 Wave + aberrometry-topography system (Visionix Luneau), originates from Soviet military space combat laser technology, which was converted into various civil applications, including ophthalmology. The machine features 500-Hz laser frequency, optimized laser shot delivery map, larger treatment zone, enhanced tracking device and improved alignment.

At the annual joint meeting of Ocular Surgery News and the Italian Society of Ophthalmology, Nikolay Pashtaev, MD, showed the results of previous standard LASIK treatments for myopia and hyperopia and a new series of 134 eyes of 70 patients with myopia or myopic astigmatism treated with the wavefront-guided procedure at the Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Institute in Cheboksary, Russia. The follow-up in this series was 16 months.

"A statistically significant improvement was noted in the mean postoperative [best corrected visual acuity]. Uncorrected visual acuity was 20/20 or better in 93% of the eyes and 20/16 or better 58% of the eyes. The wavefront-guided treatment successfully reduced the average manifest refractive spherical equivalent from –3.34 D to –0.043 D. Postoperative spherical equivalent refraction was within –0.5 D of intended correction in 94% of the eyes. The average cylinder was reduced from –0.91 D to –0.42 D for all eyes," Pashtaev said.

Results with a new combination of excimer and femtosecond laser for refractive corrections, the Nano-Femto Visum Platform, will soon be disclosed.
