Patient age correlates with postoperative refractive outcomes in highly myopic eyes

Patient age affects postoperative refractive outcomes in LASIK correction of myopia, according to a retrospective case series.
At 1 year after surgery, 612 eyes that had preoperative myopia higher than 5 D were analyzed.
Postoperative outcomes were affected by patient age in a “significant, yet subtle manner,” the authors said.
A correlation between residual refraction and patient age was determined with univariate linear analyses. A correlation between spherical equivalent and the attempted spherical equivalent and patient age was found on univariate multilinear analyses; cylinder, however, was correlated with attempted cylinder only.
These analyses also suggested overcorrections and higher residual astigmatism values in older patients, according to the study authors.
They suggested that refractive outcomes may be improved with greater attempted correction in younger patients and less intended correction in older patients.
