Trifocal IOL safely corrects presbyopia, maintains contrast sensitivity

SAN FRANCISCO — A trifocal IOL corrected presbyopia and yielded high patient satisfaction, according to a study presented here.

The At Lisa tri 839MP IOL (Carl Zeiss Meditec) improved near, intermediate and distance visual acuity, Gabriel Morgado, MD, said at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting.

"The new At Lisa trifocal provides satisfying and predictable visual outcomes at far, near and intermediate distance and high resolution in mesopic and photopic conditions, excellent stereo acuity stability and good reading performance," Morgado said.

The prospective study included 26 eyes of 13 patients with an average age of 57 years who underwent bilateral implantation of the At Lisa IOL after clear lens extraction. Nine patients were hyperopic, and four were myopic. Patients had corneal cylinder of less than 1 D.

Investigators assessed monocular and binocular Snellen uncorrected and best corrected visual acuity at near, intermediate and distance; manifest refraction spherical equivalent; and cylinder.

All lenses were inserted through a 2.2-mm to 2.4-mm corneal incision. Mean follow-up was 1 month.

More than 90% of patients had binocular near, intermediate and distance visual acuity of 20/25 or better. No patients lost lines of visual acuity at any distance.

All patients had good mesopic and photopic contrast sensitivity. Patients’ reading performance was similar to that of patients who received a bifocal IOL.

All patients were spectacle independent, Morgado said.
