The Tecnis toric one-piece IOL has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for cataract patients with pre-existing corneal astigmatism and is being launched in the United States, according to a news release from Abbott.

The IOL meets the American National Standards Institute’s benchmark for rotational stability and is capable of correcting loss of focus from pre-existing astigmatism of 1 D or greater, the release said. It also can minimize spherical aberrations.

The Tecnis toric IOL is meant for patients who seek improved uncorrected distance vision, reduced residual refractive cylinder and greater spectacle independence, according to the Tecnis toric website.
