Intravitreal anti-VEGF effective treatment for complex retinal arterial macroaneurysms

Intravitreal bevacizumab safely improved best corrected visual acuity and central retinal thickness in complex retinal arterial macroaneurysms, according to a study.

The study included 38 macroaneurysms in 37 patients who underwent three monthly injections of Avastin (bevacizumab, Genentech) after a comprehensive ophthalmologic exam, fluorescein angiography and a spectral-domain optical coherence tomography exam. Patients were evaluated at 2, 6 and 12 weeks.

Study results showed that logMAR BCVA improved from 0.57 to 0.09, and central retinal thickness improved from 520.38 µm to 214.84 µm at final follow-up. The results were statistically significant (P < .0001 for both).

Fluorescein angiography showed complete closure of the retinal arterial macroaneurysms in 94.7% of patients at 6 weeks.

Macular edema fully resolved, and hard exudates and paramacular edema gradually declined in 100% of patients at 4 weeks following the third injection.
