Central fixation was unimpaired in eyes with untreated idiopathic epiretinal membrane even though they had diminished visual acuity, according to a study.

The prospective study included 14 patients who were diagnosed with unilateral epiretinal membrane (ERM).

Investigators measured ETDRS visual acuity and recorded fixation stability with the MP-1 microperimeter (Nidek).

Study results showed that mean logMAR visual acuity was 0.45 in eyes with ERM and 0.11 in healthy contralateral eyes; the between-group difference was statistically significant (P < .0001).

Fixation stability was similar in eyes with ERM and contralateral eyes.

Fixation stability was similar in patients who fixated centrally and those who fixated paracentrally, the authors said.
