World Glaucoma Week runs through March 16, and organizers are hoping the time is spent educating the more than 60 million current glaucoma patients worldwide, along with those at risk of the disease, about symptoms and treatment options.

The event, run by the World Glaucoma Association and the World Glaucoma Patient Association (WGPA), was started 5 years ago.

This year, the WGPA is focused on promoting glaucoma patient support groups as a valuable tool in spreading the message of “early detection, lifelong treatment,” Jillia Bird, OD, WGPA president, said in a news release.

She urged practices to organize screening events as part of World Glaucoma Week, as well as to reach out to patient support groups to try to educate the public.
