High-definition 3-D "heads-up" cataract surgery is now being performed in Asia, according to a news release from TrueVision.

Clement C.Y. Tham, MD, an OSN APAO Edition Board Member and the first surgeon to perform the procedure in Asia, completed eight surgeries with the TrueVision 3D Surgical System on Dec. 12, 2012, at Hong Kong Eye Hospital, the release said.

The system shows the surgical field in real time on a 3-D flat panel display in the operating room, and it can be used for cataract, refractive, cornea, glaucoma and retina surgery, according to the release.

Procedures can be performed without the surgeon continuously looking through a microscope’s eyepiece, which allows the surgeon to work while maintaining a more natural, relaxed posture, Tham said in the release. This is likely to be of more benefit during a longer procedure, he said.
