WARSAW, Poland — The overall results and fine-tuning process of the Light Adjustable Lens from Calhoun Vision may be enhanced and accelerated by femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery, according to one surgeon here.

Fritz Hengerer

“We believe that the refractive fine-tuning and lock-in procedures could start earlier following femtolaser surgery, reducing the time the patient has to wear protective spectacles,” Fritz Hengerer, MD, said at the winter meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.

Preliminary results of a prospective study were shown for seven eyes of seven patients, four with non-exudative age-related macular degeneration, operated at the University of Bochum, Germany. All patients underwent cataract surgery using the Catalys femtosecond laser (OptiMedica), followed by implantation of the Light Adjustable Lens.

“The use of femtosecond laser improved precision in capsulotomy size and centration compared with the manual technique. Refractive stability was more rapidly achieved, allowing us to perform the adjustments and lock-in procedures significantly earlier than usual,” Hengerer said.

At 2 weeks, 2 days after the lock-in procedure, both corrected and uncorrected vision were between 20/20 and 20/16 in the healthy eyes. The eyes with macular degeneration achieved 20/25.
