Carl Zeiss Meditec reported €219 million in revenue for the first quarter of the financial year, up 4% from €210.3 million in the same quarter of the previous year, according to a company news release.

Earnings before interest and taxes increased 10.2% to €31.2 million from €28.3 million.

Revenue for the ophthalmic systems strategic business unit decreased 6.9% compared with the same quarter in the previous year, partially because of increased competition within the unit as well as falling revenues for optical coherence tomography, according to the release.

Revenue increased 21.2% for the surgical ophthalmology unit and 10.3% for the microsurgery unit.

The Asia-Pacific region had a 14.1% increase in quarterly revenue, while the Europe-Middle East-Africa region had a 1.2% increase. Revenue in the Americas region was down 1.3% because a strong revenue performance in South America was blunted by negative figures in the United States, the release said.
