Outcomes of trabeculectomy with MMC unaffected by prior clear corneal phaco
Initial trabeculectomy with mitomycin C in patients who had prior clear corneal phacoemulsification yielded comparable outcomes in managing IOP to phakic eyes that underwent the same surgery, according to a study.
The study included 39 pseudophakic eyes of 38 patients who underwent initial trabeculectomy with MMC with prior clear corneal phacoemulsification and 39 phakic eyes of 39 patients who underwent initial trabeculectomy with MMC.
The primary outcome measures were success rates of intervention, reduction in IOP and number of medications at 1 year and 2 year after surgery.
Surgical success rates did not differ between the groups.
Mean preoperative IOP was 21.4 mg in the pseudophakic group and 18.6 in the phakic group. Study results showed that IOP decreased by 9.3 mm Hg in the pseudophakic group and by 5.7 mm Hg in the phakic group at 1 year. IOP decreased by 11 mm Hg in the pseudophakic group and 5.5 mm Hg in the phakic group at 2 years.
Number of medications was comparable in both groups during both follow-up visits.
