LASIK with an optimized aspheric profile, cyclotorsion control and fast repetition rate corrected compound myopic astigmatism with high cylinder, according to a study.

Investigators retrospectively evaluated 37 eyes of 29 patients who underwent LASIK with femtosecond laser flap creation.

Patients had primary compound myopic astigmatism with more than 3 D of cylinder, stable refractive error for 12 months before surgery and estimated postoperative corneal stromal bed thickness of more than 275 µm.

Study results showed that reductions in refractive sphere and cylinder and improvements in uncorrected distance visual acuity were statistically significant (P < .01) at 3 months and 6 months after surgery. Six-month data showed that 21 eyes (67%) had astigmatism of 0.5 D or less and 29 eyes (93%) had astigmatism of 1 D or less.

Induced higher-order aberrations were insignificant, the authors said. Re-treatment was done in 7.5% of eyes.
