Sutureless intrascleral IOL implantation improved vision in patients with post-traumatic aphakia, according to a study.

The interventional case series included 26 eyes of 23 patients with acute traumatic cataract who were divided into two groups. The first group comprised eight eyes that underwent sutureless intrascleral IOL implantation, and the second group comprised 18 eyes that underwent retropupillary iris-claw IOL implantation.

Patients were followed for a mean of 14 months.

Study results show the preoperative mean logMAR corrected distance visual acuity was 1.68 in the first group and 1.11 in the second group. Postoperatively, mean corrected distance visual acuity was 0.55 (P = .03) in the first group and 0.32 (P = .003) in the second group. The difference between the groups was not significant.

The mean surgically induced astigmatism was 1.91 D in the first group and 2.74 D in the second group, which was not statistically significant. Postoperative macular edema was seen in both groups.
