Paul Sternberg Jr., MD, has begun his 1-year term as president of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, according to an AAO news release.

Sternberg, a retina specialist who is active in ophthalmic education and research, is the G.W. Hale professor of ophthalmology and chairman of the Vanderbilt Eye Institute of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tenn., according to the release.

A graduate of Harvard College and University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, Sternberg previously served as trustee-at-large on the AAO board of trustees, secretary for communications and associate secretary for state affairs, during which time he helped establish the AAO’s Leadership Development Program, the release said.

Sternberg also has served as a trustee and vice president with the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology; associate dean for clinical affairs, chief medical officer and assistant vice chancellor for adult health affairs at Vanderbilt; and a member of the board of scientific counselors for the National Eye Institute and the board of directors of the International Retinal Research Foundation, among other positions, according to the release.

“Dr. Sternberg’s strong experience in medical education, professional development and research will be invaluable to the Academy’s ability to focus on health care policy, while remaining true to our core mission of ensuring the highest quality eye care for patients around the world,” David W. Parke II, MD, CEO of the AAO, said in the release.
